ISRAEL - AI to Decode Language of the Brain

After working under the radar, Gidi Littwin and Hagai Lalazar, the co-founders of Hemispheric have now come out with Descartes, which they say will be able to decipher the electrical activity of the human brain to help diagnose neurological and psychological conditions such as depression and PTSD.

“The challenge has always been variability: the same brain signal can look completely different across individuals,” said Littwin. “At a very large scale, it becomes something you can model, making it possible to measure brain function accurately and use it in real-world settings without surgery.”

“Our model is good at figuring out the unique kind of personal profile of your brain, and that enables clinicians to predict the efficacy of treatments,” said Littwin, who previously founded RealFace, a facial recognition startup, which was acquired by Apple in 2017.

“But the approach has been primarily to try to build better sensors, or improve hardware solutions, while our breakthrough is our AI model and our proprietary dataset of brain activity,” said Lalazar. “Each person’s brain is unique, like a snowflake, which is why current attempts at one-size-fits-all treatments fall short.”

Commentary: While society debates whether thoughts of intent originate in the brain or the heart, the Bible is very clear on this matter: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Proverbs 4:23 adds: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

What artificial intelligence (AI) cannot do was already done by the Creator. AI has no feelings, does not laugh or cry, feels no pain or joy, and does not know emotional ups and downs.

While we strongly endorse science, we realize there is a place where it’s limited. A surgeon cannot get to man’s emotion. Why? Because it is intangible.

Interestingly, it’s again Israelis who are at work attempting to diagnose—with the help of AI—neurological and psychological conditions.

We do well to treat our inner being (“heart”) not as a physical organ that pumps blood, but which controls the center of our entire inner person, including our mind and emotions—or as we read in Proverbs 23:7a, “…as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

The Bible teaches that the “heart” is the spiritual command center representing our thoughts, will, and desires. Jesus adds: “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23).
