China loves electric cars: making them, driving them and selling them to the rest of the world.
But despite growing global interest in the innovative sector, Chinese electric cars remain out of reach for consumers in the world’s second-largest auto market, the United States.
Advanced technology and affordable prices have driven the explosive success of Chinese electric vehicles such as BYD’s Sealion 06, a midsize SUV that “NBC Nightly News” took on a test drive in Beijing.
The rise of EVs in China has also been driven by fierce competition among dozens of carmakers that has spurred innovation and price wars. One popular BYD vehicle, a small hatchback called the Seagull, sells in China for about the equivalent of $13,000.
That has put pressure on Tesla, whose models are comparatively pricey in China at more than $30,000.

Commentary: In simplified terms, the answer is cheap labor. True indeed to some extent; however, hard facts do not support such a theory. Remember that 60 years ago, in 1967, China was not even on the economic map of competition. Today, that has changed: It is the world’s largest economy (PPP)—and, we must add, it’s still growing.
When comparing the West—particularly the USA—with the East, we may learn a lesson from Japan. When Japanese cars were first imported to the US and Europe in the late 1950s, they were deemed a laughingstock by the experts. Today, however, Japan can easily compete with the world’s leading automobile manufacturer—Germany—and the rest of the world tries to mimic Japan’s success in this regard.
What does it mean to us Bible believers? Again, we are in the world but not of the world. Our focus is not the USA, but in the end, the heavenly Jerusalem—the new heaven and the new earth.
In the meantime, the competition among the nations must lead to closer relationships, integration, and particularly equality. Otherwise, the spirit of Antichrist cannot bring about a world living in peace and prosperity.
We must add, not for us, as we will be in the presence of the Lord for all eternity.
