The United States is the biggest recipient of China’s lending activities globally, according to a study which tracked Beijing’s credit activities and found it is increasingly lending to higher-income countries over developing countries.
The report, published by AidData, a research lab at U.S. university William & Mary, said China’s lending and grant giving totaled $2.2 trillion across 200 countries in every region of the world from 2000 to 2023.
Beijing’s portfolio size is two-to-four times larger than previous estimates suggest, AidData said, adding that China remains the world’s largest official creditor.
Beijing has financed the acquisition of high-tech companies, while Chinese state-owned creditors have provided credit facilities for many Fortune 500 companies including Amazon, AT&T, Verizon, Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Boeing and Disney, the report said.

Commentary: What was unthinkable only a few decades ago is becoming a reality. Communism was once equated with poverty, backwardness, and—we must add—oppression. Not quite so today; Google AI Overview reveals: “Financially, China has undergone a massive transformation from 1990 to the present, dramatically closing the gap with the US, which experienced much slower growth. In 1990, the US had a significantly larger economy by all metrics; today, China has surpassed the US in GDP measured by purchasing power parity (PPP) and has become the largest trading partner for most countries.”
Facts are facts, numbers are numbers. The old slogan, “Go West, young man” seems to be replaced by, “Go East, young man.” WorldAtlas.com lists the ten richest Asian countries as follows: Singapore, Qatar, Brunei, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Cyprus, South Korea, Israel, and Japan.
There seems to be more to know when comparing China with the US. GDP growth from 1992–2019 is equivalent to 32 times for China, and only 2.7 times for the US. When it comes to total GDP by purchasing power parity, China became the world’s largest economy in 2014. But when it comes to per capita GDP, China’s is still only $13,445, compared to $86,000 for the USA.
However, our interest lies in the Church. In China, there are two groups: registered churches, which are government-sanctioned, and unregistered “house” churches. The number of these is all but impossible to determine with any accuracy.
An interesting article published on 3 September 2023 by thesimplepastor.co.uk asked the question, “How big is the church in China really?” It stated: “Christianity estimates range from 20 million (2%) to 130 million (9%),” then adds: “but knowing the truth is harder than you think, especially when dealing with a communist country that seeks to control the church, and in many places actively persecutes it.”
So, in summary, we don’t know, but yet we do know, because Jesus said: “I will build my church.” The real Church is composed exclusively of those who have heard or read the Lord’s commandment: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19).
