CHINA - AI Weather Forecasting

For decades, weather prediction has relied on numerical models running on supercomputers that simulate atmospheric physics. AI models instead learn patterns from vast archives of ⁠historical weather observations and can produce forecasts in a fraction of the time.

The rise of AI weather forecasting has created a new arena of competition among technology companies, research institutes and meteorological agencies, with China emerging as one of the field’s leading players.

Among the best-known AI forecasting systems globally are Google’s, opens new tab GraphCast and GenCast, Nvidia-backed, opens new tab FourCastNet and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ AI Forecasting System, known as AIFS.

While AI systems are becoming an increasingly important complement to conventional forecasting because of their speed and lower computing costs, they are unlikely to fully replace traditional weather models in the near future.

Commentary: How true, “they are unlikely to fully replace traditional weather models in the near future.”

Here we are reminded of the words of Jesus: “It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering” (Matthew 16:2b-3a). Then He scolds the religious leaders: “O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?” (v. 3b).

What are the signs of the times? There are a multitude; in our generation, the greatest sign is the physical, geopolitical rebirth of the nation Israel. This tiny country, with just above 10 million people, has been the headline-grabber for the last 78 years.

It is the great sign because the Jews are returning to the land of their fathers, prophetically demonstrating the gathering of the Church on earth into the presence of the Lord. Jesus warns, “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44).

When it comes to the much-talked-about climate change, we have the irrevocable answer in Scripture: “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22).
