The purchases are chipping away at U.S. market share as its farmers begin harvesting a bumper crop shunned by China amid a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
Since Argentina lifted its tax, Chinese buyers have booked about 20 cargoes, or roughly 1.3 million tons of Argentinian soybeans, two traders said.
U.S. soybeans have become prohibitively expensive for Chinese buyers, thanks to retaliatory tariffs imposed by Beijing in their trade war.
The purchases include a mix of old and new crops, priced at a premium of about $2 a bushel to the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) November soybean contract, the two Asian traders said.
“China is likely to further accelerate purchases of Argentine soybeans to fill the procurement gap from November to January before […] the $7-billion quota limit,” Wang said.

Commentary: Welcome to the globalized world. It’s no longer one country dominating the other, but there are some 200+ independent, sovereign states competing with each other.
The agricultural industry is no longer dominated by so-called “good old capitalism,” but socialism. For example, for 2024, US farmers received from the government $3.2 billion for corn, $1.9 billion for soybeans, $998 million for cotton, $916 million for wheat, and $74 million for pasture, rangeland, and forage. Without subsidies—and on the other hand, tariffs—the world economy would collapse.
Only few of us realize that when driving our cars, regardless of the make or model, it is subsidized. Likewise, the highways we drive on are 100% socialized—paid for by tax money. The fueling infrastructure is subsidized. We can go on and on, but where will it lead?
We believe, according to Scripture, that merchandise will be king and dominate planet earth. Not surprisingly, during the Great Tribulation, the merchants of the world will not be lamenting the loss of human life but the loss of merchandise. Here we again must quote Revelation 18:17: “For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off.”
