AFGHANISTAN - Russia Concerned About Terrorist Fighters

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its latest report on Afghanistan’s military and political situation, said the country remains complex and unstable, with terrorist networks representing the main source of unrest, as reported by media outlets including the South Asia Terrorism Portal and Russian news agency, Interfax.

The report estimates that between 20,000 and 23,000 fighters belonging to international terrorist groups are active in Afghanistan, more than half of whom are foreign nationals, underscoring the continuing threat to regional security.

It is noteworthy that Russia is the sole nation to have officially acknowledged the Taliban’s rule.

Andrey Serdyukov, chief of the Joint Staff of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), warned that their activities pose a broader threat to regional stability, particularly for Central Asian states bordering Afghanistan.

His remarks reflected growing concern within the Russia-led security bloc that networks of armed groups based in Afghanistan could destabilize neighboring countries and fuel cross-border insecurity.

The CSTO, based in Moscow, is a Russia-led military alliance comprising Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, focused on addressing regional security threats in Central Asia, including potential spill-over from Afghanistan.

Commentary: How strange: Russia concerns itself with the security of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, they had to pack up and leave defeated in 1989. The USA later took over, and again another powerful nation had to leave the country after 20 years of military occupation on 30 August 2020.

During the USSR administration, the US supported the Mujahideen. In the end, the Taliban assumed control.

A Google search explains: “Taliban is a Pashto word meaning ‘students’ or ‘seekers,’ referring to the Sunni Islamic fundamentalist political and militant group that governs Afghanistan. Originating in the 1990s, they enforce a strict interpretation of Sharia law.”

We may summarize all war throughout humanity’s six millennia on this earth with a simple statement: None ever has brought peace!

What peace are we talking about? First of all, it’s not available to collective geopolitical identities or nations, but individuals: “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
