WORLD - Leaders Fear Artificial Intelligence

Under a global cloud of wars and bitter divisions, world leaders meet at the United Nations in New York facing new fears that runaway artificial intelligence could threaten humanity even as climate shocks and escalating prices are already making life much tougher for hundreds of millions of people.

France’s UN ambassador, Jérôme Bonnafont, said it is “extremely critical” for world leaders to support the UN as the place where the world’s nations meet, especially at a time of such polarization.

“We believe in multilateralism,” he said, “and we believe that the high-level week is the occasion for countries in the world to reaffirm that they prefer cooperation and dialogue to confrontation.”

For UN chief Antonio Guterres, this will be his last assembly meeting with global leaders. He previewed his speech, telling UN reporters that power is shifting in “an era of deep uncertainty.”

Others will be vying for the spotlight on issues from rising sea levels and funding education to the fight for gender equality. Hundreds of private meetings will also convene in UN cubicles, hotels, diplomatic missions and restaurants.

Commentary: The United Nations has been much criticized on the one hand, and on the other, much praised.

It is the first time in human history that 193 member nations discuss and sometimes dictate events.

As the UN marks its 80th anniversary, this explainer reflects on how the organization has shaped international peace, security, development, and human rights—and what it means for the future. From its founding in 1945 to today, the United Nations has been at the heart of global cooperation. […] UN expert Natalie Samarasinghe takes us through the UN’s biggest achievements over eight decades—from peacekeeping to eradicating smallpox, advancing women’s rights, shaping the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rather impressive. This reminds us of Angela Merkel, former chancellor of Germany, who stated: “It is better to talk to each other than to talk about each other.”

When it comes to Israel, however, it’s totally different. UNwatch.org states that “the UN condemns Israel 17 times; the rest of the world combined only 6 times.” That is more than shocking, but at the same time, exposes the world’s attitude toward the Jewish nation.

The short verse in Exodus 29:45 says it all: “And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.” That is the real reason, the one undocumented by the United Nations.

Psalm 2:1-3 declares: “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.”

One must grasp the humor of the Lord, because verse 4 reads: “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision.” Verse 6 reveals His selected choice: Jerusalem, Zion: “Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”

What is the background—the invisible, spiritual reason for the world’s opposition to Israel? “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it” (Zechariah 12:2-3).

While the world rejects God’s chosen people, we rejoice because this heralds a message pleasant to our ears: Jesus is coming again!
