USA - Biohacker Has Incurable Stomach Condition

Bryan Johnson, the biohacker who says he wants to extend human life for as long as possible, is living with an autoimmune condition in which his stomach is “eating itself,” the tech founder shared on social media.

Johnson, who was diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism at age 21, said that this condition, called autoimmune gastritis (AIG), was only diagnosed recently.

Johnson eats a mainly vegetarian diet, and many vegetarians can struggle to get enough iron, as it’s harder to get adequate amounts on a plant-based diet.

“…The results of biopsies came in, showing clear signs of early autoimmune gastritis: early atrophy confined to the acid-producing lining, with the rest of the stomach still spared,” Johnson wrote. In conclusion, Johnson wrote: “My stomach is eating itself.”

As Johnson emphasized, autoimmune gastritis is incurable, and there are scant treatments for the disease other than management through diet and vitamin supplementation.

True to biohacker form, Johnson detailed the involved plan his health care team developed, and said on X that he hopes to “solve” autoimmune gastritis.

Commentary: According to stonybrookmedicine.edu, “Biohacking is the practice of making intentional changes to your lifestyle, diet or environment to improve, and ideally optimize, how your body and mind function. In other words, biohacking is about ‘hacking’ your biology using science, technology and self-experimentation. The goal is to gain an edge in how you feel, think and perform. ...Biohacking can also include more experimental strategies that are not backed by comprehensive scientific research, such as using a combination of supplements, continuous glucose monitors or genetic testing for specific, personalized health insights.”

Bryan Johnson, the biohacker in this article, says that “he wants to extend human life for as long as possible.” Yet despite eating a vegetarian diet and taking supplements, he was diagnosed with an incurable stomach ailment.

This reminds one of Jesus’ words, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” (Matthew 6:25). Obsessing over what one eats, or trying to prevent normal aging through constant medical monitoring, will only prove to be futile in the end. As verse 33 of the same chapter states, one would be better served by seeking “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
