DENMARK - Pension Fund Drops Israeli Investments

ree

Danish fund manager AkademikerPension is excluding Israeli state assets, including government-controlled companies, from its investment portfolio, it said, due to the war in Gaza and the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

It is the latest decision by a European fund manager to curtail investments in Israel, following recent divestments by Norway’s $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund.

The 157 billion Danish crowns ($24.77 billion) AkademikerPension, which manages the pensions of Danish teachers and university lecturers, said the conflict was not in accordance with international humanitarian principles.

The United Nations’ highest court last year said Israel’s “occupation” of Palestinian territories and settlements there were illegal and should be withdrawn as soon as possible, in a ruling that Tel Aviv rejected as “fundamentally wrong” and one-sided.

Commentary: Denmark is one of the rich, super-successful nations. Religiously, their 5.9 million population is 71.4% Lutheran and 4.3% Muslim. When it comes to life expectancy, they are one of the world leaders at 82.1 years. Per capita GDP is $73,700.

What is their motive? To punish Israel. Consider that Denmark has a history of neutrality in World War 1, and for the initial period of World War 2. Later, Denmark became a member of NATO in 1949. Now they have joined the anti-Israel bandwagon.

The headline of the above-quoted Jerusalem Post article reads, “Danish pension fund drops Israeli investments over human rights concerns.”

A Google search shows that Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland, and Sweden are consistently ranked among the best for human rights.

Interestingly, the University of Rhode Island lists five of the top countries in practicing human rights: Finland, Australia, Estonia, Sweden, and Austria—all scoring above 90 points. The United States’ score was 64, ranking it 59th. Israel is not mentioned, either at the top or bottom of this human rights report card.

Of course, we know the reason for Israel’s segregation. It is the heathen prophet Balaam who utters this about Israel: “How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied? For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations” (Number 23:8-9).
