CANADA - Bill to Ban Prayer in Schools

The Quebec government plans to enact a series of measures expanding its secularism rules across public institutions, including a ban on prayer rooms in universities and CEGEPs and restricting the offering of religion-based meals.

Six years after the CAQ government adopted its landmark secularism law, known as Bill 21, and only a month after adopting a bill which expanded Bill 21’s prohibition of religious symbols, the province is once again taking aim at the intersection of religion and public life.

The law applies to teachers, police officers, judges and others in positions of authority. It covers items such as hijabs, kippahs, turbans and crosses. The law also bars people in these positions from wearing face coverings that conceal their identity, with exceptions for medical reasons.

There’s an exemption for people who are already employed, although if they get promoted or transferred, that exemption is removed. Some school staff learned that the exemption only applies to those hired or promoted before March, when the bill was tabled—not when it comes into effect.

Commentary: This development is not surprising, for the prophetic Word clearly proclaims the unity of all religions in the end.

Romans 12:4-5 declares the perfect unity of His Church: “For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”

The separation between the believers and unbelievers is made clear in 2 Corinthians 6:15-16: “And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
