Discord is Like Suicide Says Lebanon President
The Lebanese president warned Tuesday that the country’s division have pushed Lebanon to the “verge of suicide”—sounding an alarm to the rival factions amid renewed sectarian fighting.
Michel Suleiman said the country’s political and religious leaders mustn’t turn a blind eye to the problem but instead find a starting point to solve the crisis and heal the wounds.
Suleiman spoke at the opening of a meeting of top 15 religious leaders of the country’s Christian and Muslim sects who came to the presidential palace to discuss the tense situation in Lebanon.
The meeting came a day after Lebanese troops deployed in areas of the northern city of Tripoli, where two days of sectarian clashes left eight people dead and wounded 40.
The religious leaders also stressed the need for national unity, denouncing extremism and violence in a statement after the meeting and calling on rival factions to refrain from using weapons or violence to achieve political gains.
They said the Lebanese army and police forces are alone responsible for maintaining security and stability in the country, and called for a quick formation of a national unity cabinet.

From biblical perspectives, we have to understand that much of today’s Lebanon is actually Lebanese-occupied Israeli territory. Therefore, we may not expect Lebanon to achieve lasting peace, because this nation, with the rest of the world, participates in the dividing of the country of Israel. The prophet Habakkuk proclaimed: “For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men's blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein” (Habakkuk 2:17).
