Dear Arno, Greetings to you in the name of Yeshua our Messiah.
We have heard repeatedly for decades that we are freed from the curse of the Law (Galatians 3:13). But what is the curse of the Law? The curse of the Law is described in Deuteronomy 28:15-29:1. The description begins with Deuteronomy 28:15: “But if you (children of Israel or children of God) refuse to pay attention to what Adonai your God says, and do not observe and obey all his commands and regulations which I am giving you today, then all the following curses will be yours in abundance.” This is followed by all the curses of disobedience.
By the everlasting mercy of our Heavenly Father, He sent us Yeshua (who hundreds of years later began to be called Jesus), who took our penalty for our sins so that we may have life. The curse of the Law was taken from us. Galatians 3:13 states clearly that we have been redeemed or freed from death. We are all so thankful for this redemption and pardoning from a sentence of death.
But what about the blessings of the Law? Romans 3:31— “Do we then make void the Law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the Law.” With Yeshua taking away the curse (death), the blessings still remain for obedience. Galatians 3:14— “Yeshua the Messiah did this so that in union with Him the Gentiles might receive the blessings announced to Avraham, so that through trusting and being faithful, we might receive what was promised, namely, the Spirit.” Just as a submissive heart is a sign of being in covenant with Yeshua, so is the Sabbath a sign of the King of the Universe being in covenant with his people. Exodus 31:13— “Tell the children of Israel, you are to observe my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you through all your generations, so that you will know that I am Adonai, who set you apart for me.”
It is important to note that the King of the Universe refers to the Sabbath as “His” Sabbath, not the “Jewish Sabbath.” His Sabbath, which begins at sundown on Friday, ends at sundown on Saturday. His Sabbath is a sign of His covenant with us, much like a wedding ring is a sign of a covenant between a man and a woman. So, when you mentioned the Bible says, “early the first day of the week,” this is referring to early on the day after the Sabbath or sometime after sundown on Saturday.
Brother Arno, I appreciate hearing from you, but even more so, I appreciate searching the Scriptures with any believer. It is less rewarding to discuss Scripture with the scoffers, but with the brothers and sisters, it is very fulfilling, even when we have more questions than answers. Our Father has sent us on an eternal journey that is like no other, and He reveals wondrous things at His timing. He is our Father and our King for now and forevermore. -D. Wallin, IL
Arno's Commentary
The entire Law served to identify sin in writing. Cain already knew that killing was wrong long before God had given the Ten Commandments to Israel. He was the son of his parents, who had eaten of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. We may summarize human history in the following: 2,000 years without the Law, 2000 years under the Law, and 2,000 years under grace. The Law was God’s way to show all of humanity it is impossible to keep the Law. Does that mean we may break the Law? Absolutely not, because we are now under an infinitely higher Law, the Law of grace. Jesus speaks about the Law and adds, “But I say unto you…whosoever looketh on a woman to lust…hath committed adultery…in his heart.” The Old Testament exposes law breakers. The New Testament of grace exposes each of us as thoroughly and hopelessly corrupt, without the slightest chance to please God. We must be born again; the old flesh and blood tabernacle must die. But until that time, we live because of grace.
Incidentally, our different understandings regarding some of God’s Holy Word should not be surprising, for even the apostles “had no small dissension and disputation…had been much disputing…the contention was so sharp between them….” We may consider it natural to have varying views on these subjects, but we are perfectly united in our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ through His Spirit.
